The first team tied CPR 0-0 on Sunday night at Randall's Island, taking only a point from a game where they could have really used all three.
The Kickers reserves battled tired legs and some uncharacteristic defending against a few tricky opposing players and ultimately fell 6-0 to CPR reserves.
With CPR Orange only fielding 9 players, this was going to be an easy one for the Kickers. The only questions was- how many goals would we score? Aaron Vernnand got the scoring started in the 18th minute. Seamus Kelly took over and scored at hat-trick (25th min, 60th min, 85th min). CPR would not get a single shot on goal all game.
Kickers Legends were rusty at the outset and were not able to keep possession well, while SC Gjoa had a more controlled game. However, there was little threat to Guillermo in goal as the back four of Dave, Kevin, Jesse and Tim staved off the SC Gjoa offense easily. Kickers created few chances until the 44th minute when Christian Huguenot put his head down at the top of the box and booted in a dipping shot into the lower right corner out of reach of the diving keeper. A great goal for the lead.
Legends, having shaken off the rust, started the second half very confidently and kept SC Gjoa pinned in their own half for the entire first 15 minutes before a counter-attack by Gjoa, which was stopped in the box resulted in a dubious penalty call. Against the tide, SC Gjoa equalized from the spot.
Legends would press for the win, but Gjoa’s defense was well packed, and their speedy counter kept Kickers on their toes for a nail-biting end of the game, when points were shared.
