An Absolute Bummer - MKFC 3/31 Game Recaps

First Team

The first team missed a great opportunity to climb into a tie for first place against Polonia, but came up short losing 1-0 in disappointing fashion. In the first half, the Kickers created countless opportunities going forward, springing forwards and midfielders into dangerous attacking positions, many 1-on-1 with only the goalie to beat, yet they could not find the back of the net. In the second half, the Kickers—now against a slight wind—spent a little more time defending, but still created a few more chances to no avail. The Kickers would eventually concede with just 15 minutes to go on a slow turnaround shot that trickled off GK Ryan's hand and just barely over the line and into the goal. It was a morning with a lot of impressive play, but a poor result.

Second Team

The Kickers Reserves showed up to Randall's Island for an 8am kickoff, unfortunately Polonia Reserves did not.

Over-30 Premier

The Kickers Over-30 Premier battled against the top team in the division, The Greek Americans, but came up short losing 3-1. The Kickers enjoyed more time on the ball this week thanks to the return of Aaron Vennard in the middle of the pitch. Mike Zabroski netted home a Nick Bill throw-in in the 25th minute to even the score at 1-1, but were unfortunate to not create more from any other opportunities. On the other end, the defense held tough but the quality of the Greeks came through in the end and the Kickers lost a tough one.

Over-30 Legends

Manhattan Kickers Legends were warned that Manhattan Celtic Masters would be the toughest game of the season by the manager for SC Gjoa who were trashed 6-1 by them last week. Facing a howling wind on the south west side of Pier 40, Kickers Legends survived the first half onslaught by a very good Celtic Masters team only a goal down. With the wind on our backs in the second half, and with a tactical adjustment to press high and attack, Kickers Legends would equalize through a Christian Huguenot wind-assisted free kick, followed soon after by a Joe Whiteman's chip from an impossible angle to give Kickers Legends the lead for what would have been a deserved win, but a moment of disorganization in the back allowed Celtic Masters to pull one back to share the points in the 2-2 tie. With all the other results in, Kickers Legends remain six points clear at the top of the table with 4 games left to play.
